Western Europe Mountain Route: Some pictures to warm up

This is a list of some of the nicest/most famous places I'll visit in the Western Europe Mountain Route. Just click on the links to see pictures of them.


Vienna: Start of the route and one of the nicest cities in the world. Its imperial background makes it impressive.

Grossglockner and Pasterze Glacier: The highest mountain in Austria and its glacier, the longest of the country.

Stelvio Pass: Second highest road of the Alps (2757m). In the east side it has 48 hairpin turns.

Bernina Railway: The highest adhesion railway in the Alps (2253m).

Piz Bernina and Tschierva Glacier: The easternmost 4000m summit of the Alps and Western Europe.

Aletsch Glacier: The largest glacier in the Alps, with 23km length and 120km2 area. At Konkordiaplatz, its thickness is estimated to be near 1 km!!!

Matterhorn/Cervino: THE MOUNTAIN.

Mont Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys: Highest mountain of the Alps and Western Europe (4810m). The lakes offer great views and reflects of the massif.

Barre des Écrins and Glacier Blanc: The westernmost and southernmost 4000m summit of the Alps and Western Europe.

Mont Aiguille: It's said that its ascent marked the beginning of alpinism. In the medieval period it was known as the Inaccesible Mountain.

Causses: Limestone plateaus of the Massif Central. They are cut by rivers, forming canyons.

Cirque de Navacelles: A meander in the canyon that separates the Causse du Larzac and the Causse de Blandas created it.

Carcassonne: Medieval fortified city.

Canal du Midi: It's 240km long and thanks to it, it's possible to cross France by ship.

Valle de Ordesa: A perfectly U shaped glacial valley.

Brecha de Rolando: A 40m wide and 100m high gap in a rock ridge.

Cirque de Gavarnie and its waterfall: The cirque is 1500m high and the waterfall 422m, the highest of France.

Vignemale and Oulettes de Gaube: The highest french summit of the Pyrenees and the valley on its north face.

Midi d'Ossau: A majestic mountain with volcanic origin.

Salto del Nervión: The highest waterfall in Spain, with 222m.

Naranjo de Bulnes: World famous among climbers because its west face, a 550m vertical wall.

Ruta del Cares: One of the most famous routes in Spain. 12km crossing a narrow canyon 2000m below the summits around.

Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James): One of the most famous pilgrimage routes of the world. In 2012 almost 200000 pilgrims arrived to Santiago de Compostela.

Finisterre: The end of the world. Romans thought it was the westernmost point of the world.
