The definition “intestinal permeability” refers to the bar- rier function of intestinal mucosa which prevents possible toxic compounds from reaching the blood circulation. TJs are the principal endogenous structures which control the IP [33]. The evaluation of IP can be useful in the diagnosis and management of many intestinal diseases and systemic path- ological conditions [1].

A recognised and widely used method to evaluate the intestinal permeability in humans is the lactulose/mannitol test, conducted by measuring the percentage of excretion of the two polyols in urines after their consumption [1].
